From the Meiji era to the Taisho era, as the development of onsens and the merger of municipalities progressed, the name Beppu Hachiyu gradually took root. The oldest of the Beppu onsen towns dates back to around the 8th century and is recorded in an ancient document called "Iyo Kokufudoki".
